While at Otago, Marija was involved in the Sir John Walsh Research Faculty of Dentistry Summer Studentship programme, working on the topic “Completing the “genomic jigsaw puzzle” of the oral bacterium Streptococcus salivarius strain M18.” with Nick Heng. The paper was published in the Journal of Bacteriology at the end of 2011. That strain of M18 is now used in BLIS Probiotics Tooth Guard. In her final year at Otago she was awarded the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler Award for clinical excellence and compassionate service which has continued to be the foundation of her practising philosophy. Her compassionate care has made Marija the favourite of the most nervous patients, and she takes pride in her ability to put patients at ease. She began her career in Wellington before spending five years in London, where she expanded her expertise through advanced courses on periodontitis and implant maintenance. Since 2016, Courtney has worked closely with periodontal (gum) specialists and is very enthusiastic about the benefits of Airflow treatment for maintaining oral health. While abroad, Courtney combined her career with her passion for helping those in need by volunteering as an Oral Health Therapist in remote regions of Uganda and Kenya. She also ran the London Marathon to raise funds towards establishing a dental training program in Tanzania, aimed at equipping general practitioners with the skills to provide emergency dental care.
