Bite Splint
A bite is an appliance that is usually fit to manage the effects of tooth grinding and clenching while sleeping at night.
Here is some useful information to get the most our your appliance.
Instructions
What to expect
When a bite splint is first fitted, there may be a slight plastic taste. This should disappear in a day or two
You may notice extra saliva production but this soon returns to normal.
Wear Time
Wear it at night exactly as instructed – in most cases every night is recommended.
Cleaning
Clean with a soft toothbrush and cool (never hot) water.
Soaking in CAL-DENT or Polident is a great way to keep your appliance clean.
Storage
When you are not wearing the bite splint, keep it in the plastic case or soaking.
Be especially careful to keep it away from pets who may want to chew it.
Important Tips
Call us immediately if your bite splint is broken or lost. With normal wear and tear, it can last a number of years but this is influenced by frequency and duration of tooth clenching or grinding at night. Rapid wear indicates excessive clenching and grinding forces, and the fabrication of another more durable bite splint will need to be prescribed. A fee is charged for lost, worn or carelessly broken appliances.
Bring your bite splint in for assessment at your regular dental check-up or your hygiene visit.
Please be aware that there is a small risk of a change in bite and relative tooth positions such as the development of an open bite – please monitor this as advised by your dentist.
